In Summary

About Kayumba

  • Born in 1960s.
  • Obtained secondary education at Mbarara High School in western Uganda.
  • Was Makerere University student in the 1980s, residing in Lumumba Hall.
  • He Joined NRA in 1984, and later the Rwanda Patriotic Army/Front that took over government after the 1994 Rwanda genocide.
  • Gen. Nyamwasa was immediately named army commander, drawing perhaps from his demonstrated abilities as boss of the Directorate of Military Intelligence during the bush days.
  • In 2001, he was sacked as the military chief and replaced with Gen. James Kabarebe
  • In November 2002, he was re-deployed as Head of Security Services.
  • A couple of years later, the general was appointed Rwanda’s High Commissioner to India, a position he was stripped of following Friday’s defection.

In Kampala, a press conference called by the government to calm the gathering diplomatic storm over Gen. Nyamwasa was yesterday abruptly cancelled and Minister Kutesa said he will now hold one today.

Mr Richard Kabonero, Uganda’s Ambassador to Kigali, and his Rwandan counterpart, Mr Frank Mugambye, were due to give a briefing on tomorrow’s meeting in Kampala to members of the Joint Permanent Commission, a security clearing house for the two countries to resolve thorny issues.
